Esophagram

In this procedure you will be drinking liquid barium. The radiologist will watch the flow of barium through the esophagus in the upright and supine positions and obtain rapid digital images. After the initial imaging is complete, the technologist will take an additional series of x-rays.

What are some reasons for esophagram?

→ Assessment of frequent heartburn pain
→ Gastroesophageal reflux (food/acid that comes back up)
→ Difficulty eating or drinking
→ Difficulty swallowing

Preparations:

For an optimal exam, the stomach must be empty. It is important not to eat or drink anything for at least 4 hours before your exam.
